How to Survive Modern ArtNism in clearly laid out sections illustrated in full color this book answers the need for a thorough yet manageable guide to art in the modern world With the authority of Tate one of the world’s greatest museums of modern art combined with clear text and superb illustrations this book presents everything necessary for a basic grounding in the subject. I found this book on display in my local library and picked it up I ended up liking it enough to decide to buy my own I was going to say this isn't a pretentious book about art but upon reflection none of the handful of books I've read about art have been pretentious although I read a really obnoxious story about Jeff Koons in Vanity Fair once Hodge has an MA in art history but she's very down to earth She devotes two pages to various artists and movements in late 19th and 20th century art the Blue Rider Orphic Cubism Pop Art Post Modernism Abstract Expressionism etc She explains in clear language what to look for in the various works and what made them important the straight lines and flat color in Hockney the peaceful mood evoked by looking at Rothko's color field paintings the historical context of dadism I learned a lot reading this book and it's beautifully laid out with lots of pictures and clean graphics You can come away from this book still hating some modern art I'm looking at you Jeff Koons and Donald Judd but Hodge still can clearly explain what the big deal is and tells you if you don't get it that's still ok
