Taken on Trust An AutobiographyIn his prison cell in Beirut where he spent 1460 days in solitary confinement Terry Waite wrote his autobiography A friend and I took a trip down to Hawke's Bay in February We had some time to kill in Havelock North and wandered into the Anglican Church OpShop my friend can't pass an OpShop or antiue store without going in I overheard somebody asking about tickets to Terry Waite and my ears perked up So we went further up the drive and saw a poster on the door of the church While we were perusing it and thinking that we ought to take the opportunity the Vicar came out and asked if he could help us Yes We bought tickets chatted uite a while then went and did our visiting went on back to our other friends in Napier for dinner and then drove back to St Lukes I'm pretty sure that's the name of the church to listen to a talk by Terry Waite who has been coming here to New Zealand for the last several years taking time out and time away from the English winter to writeWaite is an excellent speaker and I bought a book of his poetry which is sitting on a pile at home unread as yet I also got this book out of the library as soon as I got homeDoesn't time fly? If you'd asked me when Terry Waite was held hostage I would've said it wasn't that long ago His story is so remarkable that it is still vividI have to admit to skim reading some parts of this I realise that his childhood reflects on who he is and how he handled himself but I wasn't so interested I also am aware that his own reflections on his personal life were vital to his mental health while in captivity so I concede that all those reminiscences do belong in the book If my reading wait list wasn't so long I'd have read every line He writes engagingly and honestly

I guess it's one of those things you'll never know until you're actually in the situation and God willing that'll never be the case I highly recommend this book It's probably the best autobiography I've ever read
