The small town setting is well crafted and a central character in the plot Tem is descriptive and paints a vivid picture of the townsfolk and life in Simpson Creeks It's evident that Tem is a good writer He's descriptive without being overly so and some of his characters were pretty good I liked the characters of Ben Taylor and Charlie Simpson the best However a majority of the others were either flat uninspired or forgettable He also does a very good job of creating an authentic sounding southern Kentucky accent and dialect in his dialogue I have a family member from the state and things written here would remind me of things they used to sayThe premise is interesting A metaphor for repressed family horrors and past misdeeds andor regrets There are some imaginative moments sprinkled throughout although they are few and far between NEGATIVES Very slow and monotonous pace for about two thirds of the book I kept hoping something mildly exciting would happen to hook me but it never happened Many aspects of the plot that Tem seemed to be creating felt irrelevant and could've been ignored or condensed into a smaller section Honestly I was uite bored while reading this one The book would've worked better as a novella in my opinion The shorter length might've helped with the overall pacing I couldn't connect at all to the main protagonist Reed He was very blasé and weak minded would did not make him endearing to me at all I honestly could've cared less about what he was going through and what was going to happen to his character A painfully average book that makes attempts at creating legitimate atmosphere and fright but just ends up as drab and mediocre I appreciate the ambitious nature of Tem to try and craft a small town horror tale with some southern charm but it just doesn't work for the most part I find the fact that it was nominated for a Bram Stoker award very surprising I wish I could see what the HWA members saw in this Maybe I'd like it then I give it a very generous 3 stars easily could've been 25

ExcavationWn past he discovers that his memories of the dead are not only palpable but capable of fantastic transformatio. I’ve read short stories by Steve Rasnic Tem before and they’ve almost always struck me as stiff and arty full of odd imagery that took some craftsmanship to create but didn’t seem to go anywhere or do anything useful That’s not all that uncommon in short stories but I hoped that over the course of a novel length work Tem would be able to cut down on the experimental prose and just tell a tale No such luck I think there actually is a good story in here someplace but like the protagonist’s past it’s buried under a flood of other stuff I’m not opposed to strange undefined terrors but when the whole book is strange and undefined then the terrors don’t stand out too well And that’s really too bad Tem’s bizarre horrors could have been real spine tinglers if they cropped up in comfortable familiar surroundings
