It was nice to find a housekeeping book that was actually used as opposed to guides published to be used by others There were errors in the introduction which should have been corrected but other than that the only way to improve this little book would be to put in copious footnotes to explain things unfamiliar to modern readers eg using milk to clean a floor cloth how ones feeds a coal fire by pressing it down and lots and lots of pictures and diagrams of the floor plan mangles a goose wing for dusting etc Then it would get five stars

Ing 24 years The Housekeeping Book of Susanna Whatman offers an engrossing picture of life below stairs in one of the great 18th century English houses. This is a thin little book about a very house proud woman We find some fascinating lists of duties for the hard working servants and a good little glossary of old terms I suppose the moral of it all is that a system eg putting paper on your bed top to collect the dust makes life easier all round Personally I would have liked detail and certainly a few old 'receipts' for cleaning The real surprise to me was how carefully Susanna protected her fine fabrics and furniture making sure the blinds were pulled down to a timetable just like the present day National TrustRather poignantly I notice that Susanna's home Turkey Court is now part of an business park though you can hold a wedding in the orangery

The Housekeeping Book of Susanna Whatman 1776 1800 National Trust ClassicsMistress of Turkey Court Kent Susanna Whatman wrote down detailed instructions for her servants adding to them whenever necessary throughout the follow. This is hardly a book really Only 62 pages long and 37 pages of that is the introduction and glossary The introduction is an excellent source of book titles in a similar vein I added 24 books to my want to read shelf while reading it The content itself is interesting a window into another world
