Soul Uniue by Gun Brooke was an absolute pleasure to read I’m not going to provide a synopsis because there already are plenty of those As a person living and working with children and adults on the Autistic Spectrum I found this book to be very honest and respectful Hayden is written so well Brooke really taps into many of the behaviors and patterns of speech common among people with Asperger’s without relying too heavily on stereotypes She makes sure that Hayden is an individual rather than a parody Most importantly she recognizes that Hayden is simply different not less It is important to note that very few individuals with an Autism Spectrum diagnosis are also savants However this is a work of fiction and a romance as well so of course it works in this milieu Greer is a delightful character and although she is an “ice ueen” to those in the art world we see her caring and gentle nature almost immediately The story is told from her point of view in the first tense which works uite well We see her struggle with her uncertainty about her relationship with Hayden and see that she is just as vulnerable as HaydenThis book could have been very unsettling considering that Greer is noticeably older than Hayden and initially her mentor It could have felt like Greer was predatory but the author took care of that with some very specific information I won’t go on about that as those would be spoilersHayden’s treatment by her mother is the prime point of drama in this book and is both heartbreaking and disturbing Again the author handles this with an authenticity which is beyond touchingI loved both these women and the story hit all the right notes I know I will return to this book when I feel like I need my spirits lifted
