TEXT ✓ The Men and the Girls ´ Joanna Trollope

Lifelong friends now in their sixties James Mallow a teacher and Hugh Hunter a television personality are both enjoying happy relationships with women twenty five years their junior James's partner of eight years Kate Bain appears devoted though she will not marry him Hugh's perfect wife Julia runs him her career their house and their twins like Many years ago I read lots of this author's books In fact I have a whole shelf of them sitting waiting in case I ever fancy a reread one day However I found I had never read The Men and the Girls so I decided to give it a try I am glad I didTrollope's greatest talent has always been her character development and there are a few real delights in this book The main character James is an absolute charmer and his almost step daughter Joss is fascinating I rather liked the twins too Oh and Beatrice of course Kate on the other hand is the kind of person I dislike but I still would not wish what happens to her on anyoneI enjoyed the lovely setting of Oxford England a truly beautiful city and I found the story intriguing Relationships broke up some people fell in love with the wrong people others made life changes sometimes positive sometimes negative Nothing was over romanticised or perfect just like real lifeThe ending is sudden sharp and very real yet not disappointing This book has reminded me how much I enjoy Joanna Trollope's writing Perhaps I should do some of those rereads soon

MOBI The Men and the Girls

The Men and the GirlsClockwork The men and the girls seem wonderfully suited But the age difference is a time bomb ticking away at the heart of both relationships The first signs of difficulty coincide with the appearance of an older and fiercely independent woman who unintentionally fuels the discontent already brewing in both girls Kate's suppressed hunger for a li So so glad to be done with this book It was a terrible drag that I could barely bring myself to read and it was filled with racism that just made me terribly uncomfortable I know it was written over 25 years ago but damn Some examples “My little yellow peril”“Never met me a Cink who could make coffee”“Lychee Faced bamboo shoot”“Oriental half wit” Unfortunately the list goes on and on It would definitely have been a 1 star book but I did like the character of Beatrice and Joss’s development Beatrice was a boss and damn near the only redeemable factor of this book I wish I didn’t finish it I’m not likely to read another of the author’s novelsEdit yeah it’s a one star
