Icking After sleeping with one of Molnár’s patients Nathan contracts a rare STD called Roiphe’s Nathan then travels to Toronto determined to meet the man who discovered the syndrome Dr Barry Roiphe Nathan learns now studies his own adult daughter whose bizarre behavior masks a devastating secretThese parallel narratives become entwined in a gripping dreamlike plot that involves geopolitics 3 D printing North Korea the Cannes Film Festival cancer and in an incredible number of varieties sex Consumed is an exuberant provocative debut novel from one of the world’s leading film directo. “Could he really say anything about classical concepts of art and therefore beauty being based on harmony as opposed to modern theories post industrial revolution post psychoanalysis based on sickness and dysfunction”The master of body horror David Cronenberg has written an esoteric debut novel that proves that the director is confident with a narrative story beyond dialogue and images He allows the reader to form the visuals themselves that he graphically describes in print Cronenberg leaves some psychological motivations to the imagination but as far as vivid body mutilation not much is left to ponder there He captures it almost casually raw and sometimes with an absurd delicacy It isn’t for the weak of stomach or the faint of heart And like certain exotic diets it won’t go down or digest well with everybodyTwo photojournalist lovers Naomi and Nathan often communicate through their technology because they are usually traveling for work at different ends of the world Here Naomi is in Paris investigating a celebrity academic couple Aristide and Célestine Arosteguy existential and possibly nihilistic philosophers An allegation that Aristide has killed his wife mutilated her and eaten her is being investigated Meanwhile Nathan travels to Budapest to photograph an unlicensed surgeon perform cutting edge surgery on a young woman with breast cancer How these two stories finally connect is through people technology a rare STD North Korea global politics cannibalism Body Integrity Disorder particularly apotemnophilia and Cronenberg's active vivid imagination about the concept of beauty and artistic innovationCronenberg pulls off a uasi linear narrative albeit with some accessible jumps back in time to reveal history that while shocking failed to really seduce me while I was reading it fascinating though it was It was cold cerebral and detached However I waited several days to write this review to see how it would linger in me My conclusion is that the director was effective in transmitting florid and shadowy images behind my eyes even as the characters fade And as a film director it is what he does best He frightens through hyper surrealism and leaves you with fears beyond the savage acts of his characters The finale is both coy and suggestive which conveys that the horror of being monitored of privacy uashed by a terroristic government may not be many steps apart from our society of social media fetishism The crimes and the criminals have some blurry lines to navigate and our obsession with images the “other” and social media have conseuencesThere are many themes to explore here and Cronenberg is no doubt an intrepid genius and techno obsessed especially Apple and Nikon I have to admit though that I didn’t enjoy this book but was riveted by his combo of psychological and body horror and felt compelled to see where it was going Like watching surgery on LSD I did feel that Cronenberg’s characters are largely straw like—the relationships often felt contrived—selected only to further his themes and harrowing plot Aristide did come alive as did Sophie Roiphe at intervals But it was not enough to convince me to empathize Of the Davids I prefer LynchThis is certainly a filmic book in the Cronenberg esue vintage way And this may appeal to certain fans of the macabre But it is a matter of taste It went down hard and cold for me

ConsumedThe exhilarating debut novel by iconic filmmaker David Cronenberg the story of two journalists whose entanglement in a French philosopher’s death becomes a surreal journey into global conspiracyStylish and camera obsessed Naomi and Nathan thrive on the yellow journalism of the social media age They are lovers and competitors nomadic freelancers in pursuit of sensation and depravity encountering each other only in airport hotels and browser windowsNaomi finds herself drawn to the headlines surrounding Célestine and Aristide Arosteguy Marxist philosophers and sexual libertines Célestine. This book is a multidimensional rollercoaster ride into a hallway of warped mirrors Nothing is as it seems We begin with a sensationalistic news story and two overly eager journalists who would sell theirs souls for a good angle The narrative continues by splitting up into surreal and bizarre directions which defy rationality and linearity  Paranoia conspiracy theories treachery and madness lead us further into the funhouse Human grotesueries and detailed sexual scenes are described with as much precision as the technological tools that so slickly define reality  The reader is plunged into foreign countries and eually foreign aspects of obsession and delusion  While the plot tends to meander at times and the coincidences occasionally approach implausibility there is a dangerous lure of possibility that satisfied this readerMany thanks to my friend Edward Lorn for reading this with me and special thanks to the person who gifted me this book

If you get your book recommendations from me I would like for you to read the next four paragraphs If you're here for the review scroll down until you see REVIEW STARTS HERE ThanksFriends who joke about me steering them wrong are not the topic of conversation todayWe all have our breaking points Mine came yesterday in the form of 12 negative comments and three reviews written by friends or at least those I am well enough acuainted with here on Goodreads to call friends Only one person called me out by name but the other two alluded enough with their prominent author reviewer and author known for his reviews than his own work comments All three of these reviews were of a book I'd recently read and because the one who mentioned me by name buddy read with the other two well I just put one and two together Point taken assholes I hope the block button works this timeI received a total of 23 comments yesterday and over half were mean spirited or downright fucking ugly I deleted the ugly ones as I usually do I'm not naming names here either If you're that interested I'm sure you can find out who and what I'm talking about Usually I let this shit go Just like negative reviews of my work I just chalk it up to people's opinions which I cannot nor would I want to change But yesterday was too much for even me to handle So the assholes won and I wrote a ragey little review in this space If you read it I meant what I said I'm not taking that back Stop blaming me for books you don't like You're a fucking adult and you're responsible for your own goddamn money I don't write reviews to sell books I write them because I find them entertaining and other people seem to like them so I make them public If you buy a book because I liked it that's your choice But if you continue to buy books I like and continue to dislike them and then bitch about how I recommended it I'm going to be frank and call you a fucking moron You're Bart Simpson grabbing for that electrified piece of cheese again and again and again Obviously you don't have the processing speed to compute that you and I don't like the same shit It's certainly not a problem with me REVIEW STARTS HEREI don't have much to say about the book other than I enjoyed it and that I understand why people didn't like it Consumed is definitely a polarizing experience Hell even I hated it until the last hundred pages I kept saying to myself If he manages to pull all these threads together I'm giving him five stars Well Cronenberg came through by the end but something still niggled me I'll highlight that in the spoiler section In summation Sorry that I don't have much to say about this mindtrip but I feel that mentioning even what's in the synopsis would be a spoiler Enjoy or hate it for yourself I dug it by the endFinal Judgment As good if not better than his moviesSpoiler discussion view spoilerNathan catches STD from Dunja who was Molnar's patient and ends up giving Naomi the disease Because of this he goes looking for Roiphe finds him and his daughter Chase who has the 3D printing press While this is going on Naomi meets uestion Mark Cock Herve Blomuist Molnar Romme Vernegaal Already can't remember lol who directs her to Astroglide She flies to Japan and interviews Astroglide about killing and eating Celestine Cue flashbacks in first person of Astroglide's life and his super duper hearing aids One boobectomy later Celestine disappears uestion Mark Cock and Astroglide conspire with Chase to build a fake Celestine with her 3D printer for a faux cannibal photo shoot French police might or might not know Celestine isn't dead but they want to extradite Astroglide anyway so he dips out to North Korea because Japan is considering letting them Naomi goes mad for some fucking reason while Nathan digs up all the clues and puts everything together Here's my biggest beef with the whole production Cut out Nathan's convoluted journey and you're left with a pretty succinct story Nathan's sections served as a root to reality While Naomi is over here losing her mind Nathan is centered and collecting data That's great but the catalyst to this whole section is the reliance on Nathan going after Roiphe which hinges on him catching the disease from Dunya which relied on her talking him out of using a condom which relied on him wanting to fuck her in the first place If I remember correctly her body was like the female version of the elephant man all covered in tumors That seemed like a pretty thin extremely convoluted way to get Nathan into the story Not unbelievable just overdone in my opinion hide spoiler
