TEXT ß Farewell Bergerac Ó Fredrik Nath

Plies and a beautiful SOE agent whom Dufy falls in love with But as the invaders hunt down the partisans in the deep crisp woodland nothing works out as Dufy had hoped 'Farewell Bergerac' is an unforgettable wartime tale of fragile love loss and redemption I really liked this book this author has a great gift of letting your imagination picture exactly what's going on and as it's set in a time period I like reading about that made it all the enjoyable It's fiction so not everything is accurate ie locations etc but I didn't feel that mattered at all The reason it has 4 stars from me and not 5 is because I loved his other book called the cyclist just a little bit

Farewell BergeracRity Police She breathes life into his world and gives him a reason to go on Dufy begins a path of revenge on the occupying Germans A sniper in the Great War he uses his skills to devastating effect always posing as the town drunk Then the British drop sup Occupied France was a tense dangerous and threatening place Fredrik Nath portrays it well and in Farewell the main character a disillusioned and depressed schoolteacher turned Resistance fighter François Dufy spends the second half of the novel trying to evade captureHis journey to where he is has been fraught with tragedy Those closest to him have been killed and he descends into an existence of self pity and heavy drinking He loses his job and becomes the town drunk A Jewish girl Rachelle who he rescues from the Nazis is the catalyst for his change He starts working for his old general in the First World War and becomes involved when a British agent Shirley parachutes into his life Nath creates and maintains suspense as François fights the good fight with an inexperienced and naive but enthusiastic group of young Resistance fighters He falls in love with Shirley and she along with the Jewish girl provides a semblance of much missed family for him François is a likeable character courageous courteous and contrary He becomes aware of his feelings as the narrative develops and although the ending is predictable it is what readers would want Nath’s writing in places would benefit from another edit but his creation of the tension and uncertainty of the era and characters whom readers will become attached override that minor point Nath creates atmospheric tension with a high level of detail Farewell is the second novel in a loosely connected trilogy set in Occupied France
